Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation continues its humanitarian assistance to northern and eastern Sri Lankan communities to help them regain their livelihoods that have been lost due to natural disasters and prolonged civil war. They made another valuable contribution by funding the Rainwater Harvesting Project in the Jaffna Peninsula, along with the Office for National Unity & Reconciliation (ONUR).
The Lycamobile chairman and founder of Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation, the great philanthropist Subaskaran Allirajah and Co-Founder Mrs.Prema Subaskaran accepted the funding request for US$565,000 (LKR 80 million) made by the past president Madam Chandrika Bandaranayke Kumaratunga. This was made to implement the Rainwater Harvesting Project by constructing 1,000 Nos Cement Ferro Tanks in the Jaffna Peninsula.
The project is to be executed by the newly established Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR), with the patronage of President Maithiripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickeramasinge, with the vision of establishing a nation with unity and economic prosperity. The MOU was signed with the Director General of ONUR by Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation. On completion of this project, 1000 beneficiaries from 102 GN Divisions will benefit in the Jaffna District.
Rainwater harvesting techniques, practiced since the 1990’s, were very successfully implemented in many other districts of Sri Lanka. In the Kilinochchi and Vavuniya Districts, rainwater harvesting with Cement Ferro Tanks are currently benefitting many households.
