One of the major environmental health hazards identified in the Northern peninsula is the lack of sanitation due to the absence of toilets and clean water facilities. Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation, motivated by the philanthropist Mr.Subaskaran Allirajah, Mrs.Gnanambigai Allirajah, Co-Foundaer Mrs.Prema Subaskaran and Mr.Prem Sivasamy, has made very valuable donations to change the lives of many people in Sri Lanka. The foundation readily agreed to the plea for help from residents of Chankanai, who found themselves in dire need of help. Young teenage girls had been living in very poor conditions for the last several years and were unable to complete daily tasks due to the lack of toilet facilities.
The groundbreaking ceremony to inaugurate the construction of 37 NO’s toilets was held in the Chankanai Thanavodai village on the 5th February 2015, with the patronage of Jaffna District Government Agent Mr.S. Arumainayagam, Divisional Secretary Mr. Sothinathan and Pradeshiya Saba Treasurer Ms. Nagaranjani.
Speaking on the occasion, the Jaffna District Government Agent thanked the founding members of Lyca’s Gnanam Foundation, Subaskaran Allirajah, Mrs.Gnanambigai Allirajah and Mr.Prem Sivasamy, for their valuable contribution of constructing 37 NO’s toilets in the Chankanai area, at a cost of Rs 4.5 million. He assured the community he will also reconstruct the roads, which are in a depleted condition, and other basic facilities required by the Thanavodai Community.
